Website maintenance: what you pay for and what you get
"Website maintenance" is a vague label. Two plans with the same name can cover completely different work. Whether it is worth paying for depends on what the plan does and what your site actually needs.
What "maintenance" can mean
Plans usually mix some of these:
- Technical upkeep. Software updates, backups, security monitoring, uptime checks.
- Content updates. Changing hours, prices, staff, services, photos, adding a page.
- Improvements. Making the site clearer, better looking and better at turning visitors into enquiries.
- Support. Someone to ask when something looks wrong.
Many plans focus on the first item. That keeps the site running, but a site can be perfectly maintained technically and still show last year's prices and a homepage nobody understands.
When paying for maintenance is worth it
- Your site changes more than you can keep up with. Seasonal hours, new services, price changes. If updates sit on your to-do list for weeks, customers are seeing wrong information.
- You do not want to learn the editor. Your time is better spent running the business.
- The site brings in work. If enquiries come through the site, keeping it accurate and easy to contact you from has a direct value.
- Nobody currently owns it. A former contractor built it and you are not sure how to log in. That is a risk on its own.
When it probably is not
- The site almost never changes, and you are comfortable making the occasional edit yourself.
- The plan only covers things you do not need, or does not say clearly what it covers.
- The site is so outdated that maintaining it as-is makes no sense. Then the first question is whether it needs a refresh or a redesign (see Refresh vs redesign).
Questions to ask any provider
- What exactly is included each month, in plain words?
- How do I ask for a change, and how fast does it happen?
- Will the site get better over time, or only stay as it is?
- What is the monthly price, and is there a setup or activation fee?
- What is not included?
If the answers are vague, the plan probably is too.
Where Yulpo fits
Yulpo is an AI agent that keeps your website current. It works with WordPress sites first; Yulpo's connector publishes the changes, so you never edit WordPress yourself.
Yulpo focuses on the parts of maintenance owners notice: how the site looks, whether it brings in enquiries, and whether it is up to date.
- It sharpens your existing website: a better hero, a better lead capture section and better design. It is not a redesign.
- It keeps the site current through a chat window. You say what changed instead of logging in to edit.
- It costs $99/month.
If you need a full rebuild, Yulpo is not that. If you want the site you have sharpened and kept current, that is what it is for.
