How to fix a broken small business website fast
"Broken" can mean very different things: the site will not load at all, a page shows an error, the contact form stopped sending, or the site works but looks dated and brings in no enquiries. The fastest fix starts with naming which one you have.
Step 1: Work out what kind of broken it is
- Nothing loads. Usually a domain, hosting or DNS problem. See Website down? What to check and who can fix it.
- One page or feature fails. Often a recent change: an update, a new plugin, an edited page.
- The contact form or phone link does not work. Quietly the most expensive kind, because you lose enquiries without noticing.
- It works, but nobody gets in touch. Not technically broken, but not doing its job.
Step 2: Fix what you can in the first hour
- Check from another device and network (for example your phone on mobile data). This rules out a problem on your own computer or office connection.
- Undo the last change. If something broke right after an update or edit, reversing it is usually the quickest fix.
- Test every way a customer contacts you. Submit your own form, tap your phone number on a phone, click your email link.
- Check your renewals. An expired domain or hosting plan is a common and easily fixed cause.
- Write down what you see. Exact error messages and when the problem started make any helper faster.
Step 3: Know when to call someone
- Hosting provider: the site is down, slow everywhere, or showing server errors.
- Domain registrar: the domain has expired or points to the wrong place.
- Developer: custom features, broken code, or anything after a failed update you cannot undo.
Ask for a clear quote and a time estimate before work starts.
Step 4: Once it works, make it work better
Many "broken" websites are really sites that are out of date: old hours, old prices, a homepage that does not say clearly what the business does, and no obvious way to get in touch. Fixing the outage gets you back to zero. The next step is making the site earn its keep.
Where Yulpo fits
Yulpo is an AI agent that keeps your website current. It works with WordPress sites first; Yulpo's connector publishes the changes, so you never edit WordPress yourself.
What Yulpo offers is about improving and updating a website that works, not getting a down site back online. If your site is down right now, start with the steps above and your host.
Once your site is up, Yulpo helps with the second kind of broken:
- It sharpens your existing website: a better hero, a better lead capture section and better design. It is not a redesign, so you keep the site you have.
- It keeps the site current through a chat window, so information does not drift out of date again.
- It costs $99/month.
For a plain list of what Yulpo does and does not do, see the Yulpo capability spec.
